The energy in the Martin Theater was palpable when the spellers took their positions on the stage to compete in the 12th annual Dalton School Spelling Bee. This year’s grade-level spelling bee champions (listed below) ushered in the new year by displaying their spelling prowess in the school-level bee.
Challenged to spell words like permanence, sustenance, and appeasement, the ten best spellers from Grades 5-8 participated in a live event attended by their peers. In addition, 4th graders watched via livestream.
Three 6th graders, Isabel “Izzy” Canada '29, Aaron Kotchen '29, and Sidarth Singh '29 won the competition and will be moving on to the next level of competition in the NYC finals. For the first time, the citywide competition will include a vocabulary section that tests the students’ knowledge of Greek and Latin roots.
Following this online qualifying round, the students will compete in the New York City citywide Bee, an in-person event that will take place in early spring.
Congratulations to the three alternates: 5th grader Alice Ehrlich '30 and 7th graders Astrid Lemons '28 and Henry Balber '28 — and to all of the students who helped us carry on the spelling bee tradition at Dalton.
