Woodworking and Cooking at Big Dalton for 3rd Graders in Barton House
As an extension of their Eastern Woodlands unit in Social Studies, the 3rd graders in House 44 visited Big Dalton for a cooking class with Chef Jaz and a woodworking lesson with Director of Institutional Research and Initiatives Dan Musick and Makerspace Coordinator Rebecca Erde.
In the Teaching Kitchen, students made cornbread — following a recipe inspired by the Eastern Woodland Lenape tribe – with corn flour and dried strawberries, ingredients that the Lenape tribe traditionally used during the winter seasons.
With Dan, Rebecca, and 10th grade woodworking students, the 3rd graders learned about the different types of trees and techniques that Algonquin tribes used to build canoes. Then it was time to take action as the 3rd graders enjoyed participating in the 89th Street canoe project as they learned about sanding techniques and helped sand wood panels.
The students were so excited to visit 89th Street and see their lessons come to life!
