HS History Class Enjoys Fascinating Conversation with Professor Tim Wu

HS History Teacher Dr. Sarah Dunitz's elective, "From Salons to Social Media: The History of the Public Sphere," welcomed Professor Tim Wu to the class on Monday, March 6. A professor at Columbia Law School since 2006, Wu has also held posts in public service, most recently serving in the White House as special assistant to President Biden for technology and competition policy.
The class prepared for his visit by reading excerpts from one of his critically acclaimed books, The Attention Merchants: The Epic Scramble to Get Inside Our Heads (2016).

Wu engaged the class in a fascinating conversation about how the notion of privacy emerged alongside 18th-century capitalism and the extent to which contemporary media, technology, and advertising have undermined the continued existence of any such zones of privacy. In addition, the students sparked the conversation with thought-provoking questions about the present and future state of social media.
