6th Grader Penelope Koehl Wins Scholastic Magazine Writing Award
Congratulations to 6th grader Penelope Koehl, who won Scholastic Scope Magazine’s Paired Texts Contest!
Penelope, who competed with thousands of students nationwide, received praise from the magazine’s editor for her outstanding writing. The February 2023 edition featured “paired texts” that explored essential questions such as: What drives innovation? How do advances in technology affect our lives? (and) How can we overcome obstacles? The articles featured two selections: “Into the Poison Cloud” the incredible life of Garrett Morgan, by Tod Olson, and “6 Qualities of a Successful Inventor” by Mackenzie Carro and Alessandra Potenza.
Penelope’s winning submission skillfully applied ideas about the characteristics of successful inventors to the story of Garrett Morgan, an African-American inventor whose creations have saved countless lives. Kristen Lewis, the magazine's executive editor, wrote, “We enjoyed the way you used the text to support your points. Great work!” The magazine awarded Penelope with a copy of How We Got To Now by Steven Johnson.
