Dalton Girls Take the Windy City by Storm at the 2023 All-Girls Chess Nationals
Nineteen Dalton girls traveled to Chicago to compete in the All-Girls National Chess Championship at the Palmer House in Chicago, with all four teams finishing in the top 5.
Under 8 - 3rd Place (Wren Chisholm ‘34, Emma Kim ‘34, Skye Drivin ‘34, Diane Myers ‘34, Rayna Gupta ‘34 & Audrey Kotchen ‘33)
Under 10 - 5th Place (Carolina Vasilatos ‘33, Cecilia Cooper ‘33, & Eden Klein ‘31)
Under 18 (Pippa Lee ‘24, Julia Miyasaka ‘24, Lauren Nam ‘26, Veda Safranek ‘24, and Reese Rutkoske ‘28), 2nd place, with Julia Miyasaka finishing 8th place individually.
For the U18 team, this capped off a decade of competing together, taking 1st place six of those years and top 3 otherwise. Director of the Dalton Chess Program Beatriz Marinello and Chess Coach Alexander Kure led the team, joined by assistant coach Langley Beaudoin ’23.
As the U18 team is moving on, they formed the Girls Chess Initiative last year, with the goal of mentoring the next generation of Dalton girl chess champions. If this tournament is any indication, there will be many more championships ahead!
