Unlocking the Power of Words: Celebrating Our 6th Grade Literary Stars

As we wrap up an extraordinary year of literary achievements, we are delighted to celebrate the accomplishments of our talented 6th Grade students in the Scholastic Scope Writing Contests.
These young writers have earned well-deserved recognition for their outstanding work, showcasing their creativity, mastery of language, and dedication to the craft of writing.

We are thrilled to announce the achievements of the following students:

November Winners

  • Risha Agarwal ’30 and Andrew Dele-Michael ’30: Winners of the “Follow the Water” Contest. Their essays stood out for their creativity and impressive use of text evidence, weaving compelling narratives supported by well-chosen references. They each received a copy of Kevin Emerson's book, Last Day on Mars, as a prize for their hard work and dedication.
  • Hannah Chan ‘30: Winner of the Root Power Contest. In her exploration of the etymology of the word “gratitude,” Hannah demonstrated her understanding of the word’s origin through wordplay and art.

February Winner

  • Cora Tenny ‘30: Winner of the Pangolin Contest. Cora's work reflects her unique voice and dedication to the art of writing.

March Winners

  • Nina Herrick ’30 and Imogen Phillips Royo ‘30: Winners of the Root Power Contest. Their work highlights the importance of studying word origins and the endless possibilities that come with mastering language.
  • Eleanor Wang ‘30 and Reha Agarwal ‘30: Winners of the "Gone Again" Contest. Their creative writing skills and ability to craft engaging stories earned them national recognition.

April Winners

  • Dylan Kim ‘30: Winner of the April Root Power Contest. In the April issue, students learned the Latin prefix "extra," which means outside or beyond. Dylan’s insightful exploration of word origins showcased her linguistic prowess and creativity.
  • Teddy Chan ’30, Joshua Kuruvilla ’30, and Neal Ring ‘30: Winners of the Don’ut Contest for their original stories “Don’ut Break Tradition” inspired by S.K. Ali's work from the April 2024 issue. Their pieces analyzed the theme of what makes a special day special, demonstrating their ability to engage with and analyze fiction.
These accomplishments contribute to the remarkable overall success of our 6th Grade students in this year's national Scholastic Scope Writing Contests. In total, 21 students from the 6th Grade have earned national recognition for their literary prowess, reflecting the impressive talents nurtured within our school. We are incredibly proud of all 21 young authors and their dedication to honing their craft.

Congratulations to all our winners! We look forward to seeing how these talented students will continue to grow and inspire their peers with their love for language and literature.
