House 24 Visits Jackson Heights & NYC Council Member Shekar Krishnan
2nd graders in House 24 took an educational and cultural field trip to Jackson Heights as part of the Neighborhoods study.
Students met with NYC Council Member Shekar Krishnan, the first Indian-American elected to the New York City Council. They asked Council Member Krishnan his perspectives on improving the community and the challenges he faces. When asked about his biggest challenge, Council Member Krishnan spoke about the need for patience when working in government — that you may have great ideas as a leader, but it takes time and a lot of work to bring them to fruition. House 24 students also added that perhaps “persistence” and “perseverance” is also needed. So, House 24’s motto for all worthwhile efforts is now: Patience! Persistence! Perseverance!
Beyond meeting with Council member Krishnan, H24 explored the wonders of 74th Street, including Butala Emporium for cultural and religious artifacts and Patel Brothers for South Asian foods and market items. Jackson Heights field trip was an informative and multisensory experience for the class!
