“A Seat at the Table” Kicks Off with Leaning In and Leaning On: Intentional Listening and Engagement

At this year's first “A Seat at the Table” event, parents from all divisions joined administrators over a shared meal to explore the science and research behind conflict and connection in relationships, focusing on intentional listening and engagement.
The evening began by sharing data on continued rising political polarization and its impact on communicating across differing perspectives, followed by insights into the neuroscience of decision-making and how brains react to opposing views. Facilitated by Associate Director of Equity and Belonging Diku Rogers, participants engaged in an exercise that shifted the focus of a conversation from persuasion to understanding, emphasizing the importance of approaching dialogue with curiosity. The event culminated with small group scenarios where participants practiced using the learnings and strategies from the evening in real-world, everyday situations.

The evening was a meaningful partnership between the Parents Association and the Equity and Belonging Office. Thank you to the participants for their thoughtful and productive engagement.

We will communicate details about the next “A Seat at the Table” event in the coming months.
