Juniors and seniors in Acoustics: The Science of Sound and Music hosted a lively, pizza-fueled poster session to showcase their exploration of the Metropolitan Opera's acoustics.
Over the past weeks, they have been hard at work collecting in-situ data, analyzing sound dynamics, writing scientific papers, and crafting scientific posters about this iconic venue.
For this final project, they applied concepts learned earlier in the course — such as the physics of sound (Assignment 1) and the structure and function of soundscapes (Assignment 2) — to the opera Aidanamar by Federico García Lorca. During the engaging and musical poster session, they presented insightful findings on reverberation time, sound reflection, and sound absorption.
Faculty from various high school departments attended the session, offering diverse perspectives and engaging in discussions about the results through multiple lenses. The students’ hard work and creativity culminated in an exciting and inspiring conclusion to their exploration of acoustics.
