PA's Muslim Families and Culture Group Takes Guided Tour of the Islamic Art Galleries at The Met
A group of 25 Dalton parents attended a guided tour of the Metropolitan Museum’s Islamic art exhibit on Thursday February 13, organized by the Muslim Families and Culture parent group.
The collection of Islamic art at The Met ranges in date from the seventh to the twenty-first century, and reflects the diversity and range of the cultural traditions of Islam, with works from present-day Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Central Asia, West Africa, Iran (Persia), Iraq, Syria, and South Asia.
In 2011, the Museum opened fifteen new galleries to display art from the Islamic world. Artistic traditions promoted during the Ottoman and Mughal Empires, Arabic calligraphy, the use of the eight-point star in Islamic art, intricately woven Persian carpets, mosaic tile work and lamps from mosques, ceramics, textiles, and Islamic architecture were some of the highlights of the tour.
Many thanks to the PA and Dalton’s Museums Department for helping make this event happen.
