Dalton Musicians Share Their Talent

At the Chamber Music Concert on April 21st, student ensembles playing cello, piano, trumpet, viola, and violin performed works by Beethoven, Ravel, Shostakovich and a new sonata by Dalton student Thomas Reeves, Sonata No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op. 39. This piece, originally commissioned by Annie Lemieux, was previously performed at the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar and at a pre-college recital at Julliard. The Dalton Spring Jazz Concert, held on April 29th, featured three groups and soloists playing challenging material across the jazz spectrum. A tribute to Freddie Hubbard by the Jazz Quintet, the piano solo on Come Sunday, and the Jazz Trio's rendition of Blue In Green were among the highlights.

The next evening, on April 30th, the Percussion Ensemble and the Dalton Orchestra joined forces to provide a wonderful evening of music. The Percussion Ensemble played a work by Bach and finished with a piece by Pete Townsend of The Who to wild applause. The Orchestra played works by Mendelssohn and Haydn. The concert ended with Thomas Reeves’ Ode to Dalton, Op.43. This piece was commissioned by the school and first performed by the orchestra to an audience of over 1,000 at Dalton’s 90th Birthday Celebration.

The Chorus, recently returned from a successful Spanish tour through Seville, Cordoba, and Granada, completed the spring music season with a performance on Tuesday, May 19th at the Park Avenue Christian Church. It was an outstanding program, primarily with repertoire from the Spain tour. Music included Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, pieces by Jean Berger and Josquin Des Prez, and American spirituals including Down to the River to Pray and Soon I Will Be Done.
