First Program Scientists - Hydrologists and Sociologists

Jim Best, Associate Head of School and Jim Zulakis, Communications Director, paid visits to Houses 44 and 46 last week. They discovered two houses actively engaged in science-oriented labs. View the video.
In House 44,  House Advisor Jody Seiffert guided the children in learning how water makes its way from mountain peaks to the sea. In House 46, Camille Ehrenberg conducted a game to help her house understand the importance of listening, even when the situation makes doing so difficult. Both teachers pulled from their extensive training.

Bank Street's prescribed use of manipulative models, such as the one Ms. Seiffert used to illustrate the terrain and water flow, helps children to grasp the concept of water flow and to actually witness it as it cascades down the various structures in the model. Bank Street's progressive philosophy places it a position to be a leading graduate school and prominent training ground for many of Dalton's First Program teachers.

Ms. Ehrenberg experienced and played the same socialogical game about listening that she asked her students to play. She transcribed the game for her first graders from a workshop which she attended at the Nueva School in the Bay Area. The Nueva School is "a nationally recognized independent school serving gifted students and emphasizing integrated studies, creative arts, and social-emotional learning."
