Perspectives on Service Learning

Speakers Maggie Jones Patton and Jane Powers, Ph.D. defined Service Learning for parents at the PA meeting on Friday January 7, 2011.
Moderated by Amy Stursberg, Dalton parent, they described how Service Learning differs from community service and other educational methods that engage students in meeting community needs.They also described the benefits of service learning for students, schools and communities. The discussion following focused on what it takes to implement service learning in a quality manner and explored possible service learning models and effective strategies that could be incorporated into Dalton. The event was recorded as a Podcast.

Maggie Jones Patton:
Maggie Patton served from 2005-2010 as Executive Director of Children for Children (CFC), a New York based not-for-profit whose mission is to mobilize the energy, ingenuity and compassion of young people to discover their power and potential to solve real world problems through volunteering and service-learning programs. In 2008, Ms. Patton took CFC national through a merger with the Points of Light Institute, establishing GenerationOn, the largest youth service organization, with a market reach touching over 83% of the US population. Under her leadership, the organization was consecutively awarded Charity Navigator's highest rating and named one of the Top 10 Charities Worth Watching, recognizing CFC's overall effectiveness and growth.

Jane Powers, Ph.D.:
Jane Powers has been a Senior Research Associate at Cornell University's Family Life Development Center since 1985. She currently serves as Project Director for the Assets Coming Together (ACT) for Youth Center of Excellence which connects youth development research to practice, provides training and technical support, evaluation assistance, and resources to communities and youth serving programs across New York State. She is interested in the application of knowledge to practice, and in translating research to improve environments for children, youth and families.

Amy Stursberg is the Executive Director of the Blackstone Charitable Foundation. Since joining the Foundation, Ms. Stursberg has been responsible for the creation of a programmatic plan for the Foundation and the distribution of funds.
