On Friday, April 15th, John Neiers, Technology Director, together with Casper Calderola, Dalton Board member and Sarah Woods, 6th Grade PA rep, hosted four student Facebook experts to inform a morning gathering of parents on the nuances of this ubiquitous social media site.
Neiers first presented a short presentation including the accompanying YouTube video illustrating how quickly social media and specifically, Facebook has become one of the most widely visited sites on the Internet. Screening a clip from the Steve Martin film "The Jerk," Neiers suggested that Facebook's appeal makes users feel as if they "are somebody."
Of course Facebook, if used unwisely, can present issues for students and parents that should raise concern. What is posted on Facebook, is public and recorded in history, even after it is deleted. Users may grab and save posted photos in seconds. The group walked parents through the do's and don't's of managing an account and specifically walked through the site's security settings.
The students were incredibly adept at demonstrating the various settings for Facebook and predictably articulate in sharing tips and observations. Neiers shared two helpful links for parents.
