An Inclusive Chinese New Year Celebration

On Wednesday, January 25, 2012, The Confucius Classroom at the Dalton School hosted its first Chinese New Year’s celebration in conjunction with the Mandarin Department. This is the first time that the event was open to the Dalton community at large.
The event attracted about 200 participants, including Dalton families with students from kindergarten and high school and faculty and staff members.

Jim Best, Associate Head of School, delivered the opening remarks. The guests enjoyed Chinese food and snacks and an educational and fun filled program thoughout the evening. Attendees enjoyed an elegant Chinese Guqin performance, followed by an inspiring Chinese folk dance performance and well-attended dance lesson afterwards. The evening closed with a heartwarming performance of Chinese New Year couplets by our middle school Mandarin students. There were also several activities that went on throughout the evening, including a Chinese paper cut workshop, a Chinese calligraphy workshop and some games such as picking up marbles with chopsticks, holding a ping pong ball on a bat, and Chinese hacky sack, all of which attracted many enthusiastic audience and participants.
