The children and teachers of House 24 welcomed back the returning students from the DGI Service Learning Trip to Beijing. House 24 had previously prepared questions for the older students in conjunction with their study of the Chinese culture. The second graders are exploring diverse neighborhoods and used the information gathered from the high school students to better inform their research of New York City's Chinatown. This collaboration allowed the students to share experiences, compare American and Chinese cultures, as well as reveal any cultural misconceptions.
While in China, aside from some sight seeing activities and Mandarin classes at the #2 High School of Beijing Normal University, Beijing ShifanDaxue, the Dalton students provided English and robotics lessons to their counterparts at the Dandelion School, a school for children of migrant families. The travelers shared their many pictures and answered House 24's questions definitively. In particular, they described the grandeur of the traditional architecture in contrast to the modesty of the Dandelion students' homes. Ms. Meyer helped House 24 understand the meaning and purpose of service and described a few ways that House 24 can help families in need.
