History comes alive for the fourth grade at Plimoth Plantation. The fourth grade takes an annual trip to supplement their end of the year study of the Pilgrims, which culminates their year long study of immigration. It is one of the highlights of the year. Students visit a replica of the Mayflower and walk the street of the Plimoth village circa March 1627, interacting with the actors as they go about their daily lives.
It is thrilling to meet the people so closely studied and to be able to ask them questions about their experiences. They also visit Wampanoag Homesite where they learn about Wampanoag life in the 1600's. They watch how a dug out canoe is made, witness Wampanoag cuisine being cooked and can enter the traditional spring and winter homes. In addition students eat a a pilgrim dinner, play pilgrim games, write with quills in the alphabet of the time and learn how to be the militia that defends the plantation. It is always a fine experience for our fourth grade historians.
