In July 2012, four Dalton students participated in “Grassroots China,” a half-credit history elective offered in partnership with the Sidwell Friends School. The purpose of the course is to explore the history of modern China from the rural perspective. This year, students learned in and about the countryside surrounding Xizhou, a center of cultural preservation along the southwest Silk Road near the Tibetan plateau.
With the guidance of a trained historian and anthropologist, students conducted fieldwork by documenting houses, markets, temples, and local ethnic groups. Course participants included Malik Brown '14, Oliver Magnusson '13, Ari Tessitore '13, and Michael Zhao '13.
Grassroots China 2012 will be featured in an upcoming issue of Connections magazine. For more information, visit: www.dalton.org/dgi.
