First program house held their own elections. A second grade class voted whether they should keep or remove a bench in thier classroom. A kindergarten class voted on a Halloween treat. Voter registration cards were created, ballots, and fair election environments were created. Results were graphed and the majority ruled.
On Election Day, House 23 held our own election for an issue that mattered to us. After brainstorming a list of possible topics to vote on, the result was to vote on whether we should keep or remove our bench that we have on our rug for the month of November. Prior to voting, we heard both pro and con arguments. A strong case for removing the bench was that since only four people can fit on it, there are often arguments over who gets to sit on the bench. On the other hand, some children felt that it makes the rug space more organized for seating. Each student filled out a Voter Registration Card, which they were required to present before voting and signing in on the “District 23” list. Election Monitors (Mrs. Harnik, Mr. Kleinman, and Ms. Nickles) were present to ensure a fair voting process. Each student entered the voting booth, made their choice, and anxiously awaited the results. In the end, the majority voted for removing the bench for this month!
