High School Symposium On Media

Dalton hosted its biennial High School Symposium on the topic of media, hosting two keynotes and several luminaries representing several traditional and new media outlets.
Speakers included:
  • Gary Vaynerchuk,  co-founder and CEO of a social media brand consulting agency, video blogger, co-owner and director of operations of a wineretail store, and an author and public speaker on the subjects of social media, brand building and e-commerce. Vaynerchuk immigrated to the U.S. in 1978, and moved with his family to Edison, New Jersey. After graduating from Mount Ida College in Newton, MA, transformed his father's Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey liquor store into a retail wine store named Wine Library, and in 2006 started the video blog Wine Library TV, a daily internet webcast on the subject of wine.
  • Bill Keller, executive editor for The New York Times from 2003-2011, has returned to full time writing for the Times, and he will be speaking with Tim Minton, who founded Zazoom, a web video company in 2011, after twelve years as an NBC newscaster and twenty years on air in New York; both will speak on how the world of news has changed over the last 10-15 years, as well as how they see this landscape evolving, both short and long term.
  • Hendrik Hertzberg, a former speechwriter for President Carter and currently principal political commentator for The New Yorker, will join Thomas Gensemer, managing partner of Blue State Digital and former director of Internet strategy for America Coming Together (ACT), an organization mobilized around maximizing voter participation in the 2004 campaign.  They will be discussing the effect media has had on political campaigns and political movements.
  • Former Dalton student Gabe Levi works at Facebook as a programmer, and he has been involved in products such as newsfeed, notifications and Facebook's platform. He will be discussing how this social network has managed to stay important in the eyes of its users, especially amidst the growth of other sites. Gabe will also comment on how Facebook has changed the way we view privacy and contemporary challenges, as he also addresses challenges about its future.
  • NYU Professor, Dalton teacher and author Thomas De Zengotita will be discussing some of the ethical dilemmas that have arisen as media takes on an increasingly important role in our lives; Tom was a contributing editor at Harper's Magazine from 2006-2011, and his book Mediated was awarded the 2006 Marshall McLuhan Award. Dalton senior, Luc Bokor-Smith, will join Mr. DeZengotita, and together, they will focus on 'The Ethics of Self-Construction,' concluding with Facebook case studies.
  • Derrick Heggans is the Managing Director of the Wharton Sports Business Initiative (WSBI) and was the General Manager of AOL Sports; he was also the Assistant Counsel for Broadcast Operations and Policy at the NFL. He will be discussing how the media has changed the way sports are viewed and reported, as well as how athletics have changed over the last ten years, due to the expansion of media influence and accessibility.
  • Lucy Danziger is the Editor-in-Chief of Self Magazine (a Conde Nast publication), one of the premiere healthy lifestyle magazines for women; before joining Self, Lucy was the founding editor of Women's Sports and Fitness magazine. She will be discussing how the role of print and online editions of the magazine differ, and what changes Self has had to make to stay pertinent, while media has continued to evolve.
  • Kathy Leake works for Local Response, a company that determines, with 'intent targeting,' how advertising can best be personalized toward a specific viewership.  For example, when you search candy, or post on Facebook that you love chocolate, Local Response may push a Hershey's ad to your screen. Kathy Leake will be discussing the line that exists between what is private and what is public, and how advertising is changing as new information about consumers becomes available.
