Project Flower Street, founded by Emma Ruskin '14, is an environmental education and visual arts initiative designed to build self-esteem and foster neighborhood pride in children in Grades 1-5. Children help to collect recycled materials, mostly soda cans and plastic bottles, and use these to create 3-D flowers that become part of an outdoor public installation displayed in their neighborhoods. With funding from the Dalton PA, Project Flower Street ran its first pilot program at the Children’s Aid Society Fredrick Douglas Center in July and completed an installation in front of the center on 104th and Columbus in August. After completing the pilot, Emma received a Youth Service America-ABC Summer of Service Award, which included a $1,000 grant for expansion of Project Flower Street in the coming year.
