These paintings were created by third graders who were asked to make careful observations of animal models in order to capture their color, form, and texture.
Students begin learning how to mix colors in Kindergarten and are also introduced to observational drawing. By third grade, students learn to see subtle differences in color and are able to match the colors they see. The smaller sheets accompanying the paintings are called “color testing sheets”, they are used to preview colors on paper before adding them to the final painting. Finding the right color requires numerous attempts and a strong understanding of color mixing and color relationships.
