Spinal and Cancer Specialist, Dr. Rick Hodes Shares His Amazing and Challenging Work

Wednesday, October 2 ~ Introduced by Grace Monk, Juila Rosenheim, and Rebecca Newman, members of the Human rights Club, Dr. Rick Hodes shared his incredible and challenging work with the High School students and faculty. He treats, or he finds alternative means to treat, sick and deformed Ethiopian patients, mostly extremely poor children, who have heart disease, spine disease, and cancer.
Originally from Syosset, NY, Dr. Hodes has worked in Ethiopia for 25 years. He works at several hospitals, including Mother Teresa's Mission. He moves patients into his own home as needed. He first went to Ethiopia in 1985, intending to teach at Addis Ababa University Medical School for 1 year. In 1990, he became medical director for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in Addis Ababa. Patients travel hundreds of miles to receive his medical care. Dr. Hodes has done remarkable treatment of cancer patients who often have huge, disfiguring tumors, as well as scoliosis and tuberculosis patients who often have dramatic, life threatening deformities of the spine. Dr. Hodes raises funds and sends his spine patients for surgery to Ghana, and heart patients to India. He was a CNN Hero, was recently graduation speaker at Brandeis University, and has adopted 5 of his patients.
