Apples, Apples, All Around in House 32

Wearing newly made chef hats, House 32 began the day by making “Awesome Applesauce”, being sure to save the apple cores for later. This was followed by a quick read aloud of Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie by Herman Parish. The class also learned all about Johnny Appleseed and then did a fun assignment, for which they sequenced, colored, cut and pasted together a story about his life.
After lunch, the students estimated how many seeds were in all of the apples used to make the applesauce. Then they fished out the seeds from the remaining apple cores and used their mathematical knowledge and cooperative skills to work together in groups gluing 5 seeds onto apple cutouts. Later, they would use those apple cutouts to skip count by five to determine how many seeds there actually were in all of the apples. Last but not least, House 32 used descriptive adjectives to compare and contrast five different kinds of apples (Red Delicious, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith and Gala), and then graphed the results on a giant chart!
