Henry David Thoreau once said “it is not what you look at that matters, its what you see.” This quote by the man most notable for walking could not be more appropriate for this week’s High School Assembly speaker. Matt Green chronicled his journey walking across the United States as well as his current project of walking across every block in New York City.
Matt Green presented to a riveted Dalton high school audience on Wednesday about his experience and interactions walking across the entire United States. He talked about the people he met who took him in and provided him food and shelter as he progressed on his trip. The generosity and the stories about the people that he met along the way really was really something that impacted him greatly.
Matt’s new project is walking across every single street in the five boroughs. This trip is equivalent to walking across the country a couple of times. But the interconnection between history, architecture and people are what stood out the most. Matt described the history of buildings that he saw, including why they were built in the shapes that they were.
Matt took questions from the audience and left the crowd with a salient piece of advice. When asked by a student how in the age that we live in can one learn to stop and take in the small things like Matt did, his reaction was to schedule time to simply enjoy what’s around. His story and experience really was well received by everyone in attendance.
