Dalton Hosts Model UN Conference

Approximately three hundred students from over twenty schools throughout the Northeast gathered for the second annual Dalton Model United Nations conference on Sunday, April 27.  Run entirely by Dalton students, the conference engaged young men and women from grades seven through twelve in a simulation of United Nations debate. Topics included nuclear disarmament, education policy, and the global role of women.  The conference also included several extensive historical simulations, including a committee exploring the Iranian hostage crisis of the late 1970s.
Conference directors Abigail Kasdin '14 and David Waltcher '14 noted that they were especially pleased with the enthusiasm of the middle school participants, for many of whom DMUN was their first Model UN experience. Thanks to the expertise of the Dalton upperclassmen, who served as committee chairs, the conference succeeded in providing a forum in which students interested in foreign affairs could debate issues of global importance in a fun and educational atmosphere. Wall Street Journal editorial board member Jason Riley began the conference with a keynote speech on immigration policy, which prompted a lively question-and-answer session with student delegates.
