Anita Keshavan Attends Global Course in Cambodia

Anita Keshavan, Fourth Grade Associate Teacher, traveled to Cambodia with Where There Be Dragons, a Global Education Professional Development Course for Teachers involved in global citizenship education. The trip was for educators who would be interested in teaching development issues and/or who want to lead a trip for students internationally. Throughout her travels she engaged in activities to help bond a group and probe both intellectual and emotional challenges that commonly arise among students. Simultaneously, she interacted with locals, students, development workers, government workers etc. to understand the complexities of economic challenges currently faced in Cambodia.
Here are some broad topic areas discussed:

• Recent history of Cambodia with a focus on the Khemer Rouge
• Government land grabbing
• Illegal logging
• Mass migration of Cambodian workers to Thailand
• Violence against women
• Garment factory workers
• Resource allocation
• Maintenance of local culture and preservation of social dynamics in the wake of globalization
• Education

Anita looks forward to leveraging what she learned to enhance educational opportunities for students in the Dalton community.
