¡A Celebrar! Our New FP Spanish Program is Underway!
This year Kindergarteners are playing, creating, experimenting and singing in Spanish for 25 minutes each day in a culturally rich and communicative program. The specific program model we chose for Dalton is a FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) model in which students come to language class for a specific amount of time each day.
FLES is beneficial because it:
reinforces concepts from other disciplines
increases awareness of other cultures, peoples and languages
strengthens knowledge of first language (especially vocabulary and grammar)
is easy and fun for young learners!
Our curriculum is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) - focused. Along with learning vocabulary, communicative structures, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, students will be doing hands-on experiments, discussing science concepts, doing art -- all in Spanish! This kind of content-based learning is considered best practice by researchers and supported by our national organization, ACTFL (the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).
Our two new FLES teachers are Kavita Rehki and Nancy DíEcclesiis. They are both highly experienced, enthusiastic, and creative FLES educators who are expert in elementary language teaching and passionate about sharing the joys of Spanish with Dalton students!
