The inaugural bi-monthly meeting of Design Project Lab (DPL) was held on Tuesday, September 23. DPL is a “hands-on” skill-sharing work group for faculty and staff from all divisions. The group will meet with the specific purpose of promoting creative play and design around the intersection of Art and STEM disciplines (STEAM). STEAM, the now widely used acronym, stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
Possible topics the group will explore include: 3D printing; Adobe Illustrator and the laser cutter; “Chibitronics” paper circuits; augmented reality; printing onto textiles; physical computing; and jewelry making. Art Department faculty member, Carol Bowen, led the first meeting and taught a lesson in 2D design and negative/positive space. A DPL blog is forthcoming.
