House 35 Visits a Different Kind of Farm - Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm
Brooklyn Grange is New York’s leading urban farm education center. House 35 visited Brooklyn Grange’s second rooftop installation, located at the Navy Yard, which sits atop a 12th floor commercial building. The “World’s Largest Rooftop Farm” includes a commercial apiary that produces over 1,500 pounds of honey, a chicken coop and during the peak of the farming season, rows of tomatoes, eggplant, salad greens, mushrooms, and peppers.
The students learned the important roles that various animals and plants play in nature. They learned how a rooftop farm helps our environment. Some activities included adding things to the composting, acting out the pollination process, and learning about various herbs and plants. They even got to taste some. The students were excited to return to school with marigold seeds. Each child took some seeds home and we will plant more in the Science Roof Garden.
