FP Students Embark on Learning Opportunities for Impact Citywide
Service learning is a vital component of education at The Dalton School. By taking action to help others in need, the children are learning that they are members of a larger community and that community members have a responsibility to one another.
Here's some of what is currently happening at First Program:
Penny Harvest - FP students have begun to gather pennies. As part of a philanthropy Roundtable process, FP students will research specific organizations and decide where to allocate the funds. The students will take time to evaluate their accomplishments and make the next harvest even heartier.
New York Common Pantry - All first grade Houses will visit the New York Common Pantry. Our students will be making sandwiches and putting together brown bag dinners to donate to the pantry.
UNICEF - FP students will take part in this fund raising program sponsored by the United Nations.
Truck or Treat for City Harvest - FP students will help to feed NYC's hungry children.
Homes for the Homeless - Third graders donated Halloween costumes to less fortunate children.
Service-learning also enhances and...
builds self-esteem
develops academic skills, including communication, team building, and critical thinking
develops a sense of responsibility for decision-making
Through service learning activities and curriculum connections like the Penny Harvest, Wheel of Caring lesson and UNICEF, the entire school joins forces to help foster civic responsibility.
