Everyone acknowledged that at some time, someone had picked on them and that the feeling that resulted wasn’t good. The focus of the discourse was on how enriched our community is by all the differences we represent. No matter where we live, the color of our skin, the religion we practice or those we love, we all count (just like the colors in the book).  Even with our many differences, love is what all our families have in common. Presenters explained the significance of the Rainbow Flag as a symbol of support for the Gay and Lesbian community, the group specifically honored by Ally Week.  In addition, we reminded the children that our “Safe Space” stickers are tangible reminders that every room at First Program is a welcoming and safe place to be.  We then watched a short video of some of our High School students explaining what being an Ally means to them.  Faculty and staff surrounded the children as each declared he or she is an Ally.  We ended with a rousing cheer, highlighting the power of being a positive Ally.
