Arturo O'Farrill, a world-renowned, Grammy award winning pianist, composer and educator performed with his Latin Jazz band at High School Assembly this week in celebration of Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month.
In 2002, O'Farrill created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. The purpose of this orchestra was to bring the musical traditions of Afro Latin Jazz to a wider audience and greatly expand the contemporary Latin jazz big band experience. O’Farrill has performed with diverse, distinguished artists including Dizzy Gillespie and Harry Belafonte. He is a celebrated composer with a ground-breaking and forward-looking perspective. In 2007 O'Farrill established the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance to serve this mission on a larger level. Currently, Dalton alumnus Julian Weller serves as the Production and Operations Manager at the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance.
O'Farrill performed a few pieces while weaving information about Latin Jazz and its importance between each performance. He then took questions from students and closed with an original composition. The Dalton group Sweet 'N Low opened up assembly with a musical selection.
