Varsity Girls BB - Spectacular Season, Ivy Champs, Heading for the State Tourney
It was a historic game for the Varsity Girls Basketball team on Wednesday, February 18. They boarded the bus heading to Poly Prep in Brooklyn determined to win what was going to be the most important game of the regular season.
When the season began back in November, a talented and determined group of players working hard in the gym, never thought about how their last regular season game would be so important, but rather focused one game at a time. The team began their season with an impressive 7-0 heading into winter break, with just one game being closer than 10 points. This team had something special. Returning from break early, in order to get into the gym and practice, brought a new focus. They came out strong after and were 12-0 by the end of January, still preventing any team from getting closer than 10 points.
After exams, they then went on the road, playing a talented Horace Mann team that was only getting better as the season continued; a tough match up for the Tigers. They edged this victory by one point, only to have to play Poly Prep two days later in a game that could have decided the season. The Tigers never got ahead against a strong Poly team that hit shots and controlled the boards. The Tigers suffered their first loss. They bounced back, winning their next four games, and recalling their original outlook on the season, One Game at a Time!
The Deciding Game
Then, they had to face Poly again. The Tigers arrived at Poly to a gym filled with Poly students cheering and yelling from the tip as Dalton got out to a 17-2 lead. The Tigers were well prepared for a Poly push, but knew they had to get ahead and stay ahead. They worked hard to control the boards and the pace of the game. 32 minutes later the Dalton Tigers won the game and were declared Ivy League Champions.
The team has worked hard this season to earn the Ivy Championship title. They believed it was important for every player, 1 to 15, to make an impact. It could be seen on the court at Poly; grabbing rebounds, handing out assists, hitting big shots, creating some noise in a crowded gym - noise that was louder than the fans that well outnumbered them. As the team enjoys the victory, they continue to work hard just as they had at the start, taking it one game at a time.
The NYSAIS (State) tournament begins this week. In the first round game, played at home on Wednesday, February 25 at 5:00 PM, the Tigers will challenge the winner of Marymount vs. Hackley scheduled for Tuesday. We invite everyone to come and cheer the team on as they look to continue their successful season ONE GAME AT A TIME!
