A “Site” to See – Second Grade City Blocks & Panorama

Everyone in second grade planned and built a city block. The completed blocks fit together side-by-side, to form a miniature urban oasis. An added addition to each city block was lighting. Second graders learned how to make a complete circuit during their electricity unit in Science. In the dark, The Panorama turned into a "City of Lights" using copper tape, batteries and LED lights.
The students studied aspects of New York City focusing on zoning – commercial, residential, institutional, industrial & manufacturing, and parks & open spaces – how the city designates certain areas for certain uses so that their completed city had its needs and wants in order to function as a leading urban center in our world. Field trips were taken including one to the Museum of the City of New York for an urban planning workshop called “The Grid.”  Of course, a trip to the Queens Museum to view The Panorama of the City of New York was included in the social studies unit. All second grade students, teachers and parents celebrated the students’ hard work by viewing this amazing site and celebrating with a party.
