Middle School Spanish 3 Students Visit Colombian Community in Jackson Heights, Queens

Middle Spanish 3 students traveled to Jackson Heights, Queens to experience Colombian food and culture firsthand. The trip started at Pollos Mario Restaurant where students sampled la bandeja paisa – a typical Colombian dish with meat, beans, rice, and plantains. They also tried a variety of tropical fruit drinks like jugo de maracuyá/passion fruit juice and Manzana soda.
We walked to a panadería/ bakery where students ordered baked delicacies like pan de bono and buñelos. The students experienced local businesses, including a radio station that broadcasts in Spanish to the Latin community in Queens and throughout New York City.

Students were able to practice their Spanish in real-world situations, learn about cultural products, practices and perspectives of this Spanish-speaking community, and explore the city as a living language classroom.
