Re-engineering Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet - STEAM-Style
When seventh grade English teacher Margaret Dawson imagined how to help students understand and engage in Shakespeare's language, she got STEAM-inspired. She asked her students to do the same by finding new, creative and technological solutions to the age old problem of understanding Shakespeare's English.
For this project, she asked her students to collaborate and follow a STEAM problem-solving flow chart and use and one of the following technologies to clearly teach 6th grade students the meaning of a Shakespearean passage from Romeo and Juliet:
Whiteboard Videoscribe type visual narrative analysis (for iPad)
GoAnimate
PuppetPals
Among other presentation and software skills, the students needed to write a script, carefully consider their audience, identify the meaning and significance of their chosen passage, and explain how to look for and identify literary devices.
To get them started, Ms. Dawson worked with preceptor Dan Musick to provide some examples and then the students took off. They worked in small groups of three or four to create amazing and animated lessons to teach Shakespeare in this new and STEAM inspired way.
