Dalton had an impressive six teachers honored by The Academy for Teachers during the 2014-2015 school year. Only seven schools citywide had as many teachers honored. Angelo Bove, Felix Cortes, Lori Langer de Ramirez, Blake Pearson, Lillian Redl, and Hugh Thornton were inducted as Fellows into The Academy for Teachers and invited to participate in its selective Master Classes.
The Academy for Teachers Master Classes brings exceptional teachers together with leading intellectuals, scientists, and creative artists for a day of high-level instruction and inspiration. They are hosted by the city’s great institutions, which join The Academy for Teachers in demonstrating that teachers deserve the time and attention of our culture’s best and brightest.
Teachers invited to attend Master Classes exhibit passion for their subjects, creativity in their classrooms, and devotion to their students. “Only 18 teachers are chosen for each Master Class,” said Sam Swope, president of The Academy for Teachers. "Being selected is a well-deserved honor for both teacher and school.”
Teachers often describe Master Classes as one of the highlights of their careers. Ms. Redl, who attended a Master Class with Meredith Monk, Carnegie Hall’s composer-in-residence, called it “a mind-expanding experience” that was “far superior” to other teacher trainings. Ms. Langer de Ramirez, who was part of a Master Class led by Salsa legend Rubén Blades, called it “spectacular” and said the day made her feel “validated, valued, and honored.” Mr. Cortez, who attended the same Master Class, wrote, “The day was exciting, valuable, informative, stimulating, and thought-provoking. It meant getting new ideas, a validation of my calling, and a shot of adrenalin to go back to the classroom renewed.”
Mr. Pearson attended Master Class with Robert Battle, Artistic Director of The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Mr. Bove attended a class led by astrophysicist Charles Liu at the Museum of the City of New York, and Mr. Thornton came to a Master Class on Proto-Indo-European led by Princeton classics professor Joshua Katz.
