New Faculty and Staff Arrive for Orientation and Training
Head of School Ellen C. Stein joined several of Dalton’s administrators from the three divisions to welcome a bevy of new faculty and staff to the Goldman Library for orientation. This was the first of three days of intense sessions during the week of August 24, 2015.
Ms. Stein started the morning by introducing Dalton’s nearly 100-year history and showed “A Tiger’s Tale” the School’s 90th-year celebratory video. In an effort to emphasize the importance of community, she invited attendees and administrators to introduce themselves and to describe their position/s.
Teachers and some staff members gathered later into small groups, with guidance from administrators, to discuss House, Assignment and Lab, the three pillars of the Dalton Plan. Each group was given a series of hypothetical situations and through guided inquiry, sought possible Dalton Plan-based solutions to each.
The Directors and staffs of New Lab and the Communications Office were also on hand to provide laptops, highlight technology, and communications resources and describe procedural overviews. When the clock struck 12:00 PM, with stomachs growling, the newbies experienced their first Dalton lunch!
The day concluded with tours of Dalton’s three buildings, but more was in store for the neophytes. The group also received a library orientation, learned about Dalton's Professional Review Program, and also met by division in the afternoon. The following day, the group and a few Dalton administrators joined the Spence faculty and staff for a two-day Beyond Diversity training with racial equity consultant Glenn Singleton.
