Most spaces at Dalton serve many purposes. The second-floor hallway at 89th Street serves many purposes. It serves as the Admissions reception area, leads to the Development and Heads of School Offices, provides a theater balcony lobby, and includes an art gallery that displays several exhibitions of student work each year. As part of a larger summer project, professional lighting designer/software engineer and Dalton computer science/Popfood teacher Charlie Forster worked with Chief Building Engineer Slawomir "Slawek" Szczepankowski and the Building Services team to replace the lighting in the hallway with a new, modern system.
The new system, which looks and behaves more like theatrical lighting, is all powered by LEDs, so it uses a fraction of the power of the old system. The lighting makes the current gallery of portrait art look as if each work of art is glowing.
Thanks to the system's flexibility, future exhibitions will be lit to enhance the artistic intent of the students, and in turn, the students may design work with specific lighting in mind. In addition, this summer, Mr. Forster replaced many of the stage lights in the Martin Theater with LED fixtures, enhancing the flexibility and quality of productions in that space.
