Congratulations to our Dalton Chess players who attended the National Grade Chess Championships 2017 in Orlando, Florida. Three Dalton teams took first place and two teams took second place trophies. Overall, Dalton is ranked #1 overall in the nation.
Dalton students from grades K-6 traveled to Chicago to compete in the All Girls’ National Chess Tournament from April 7-9, 2017. For the past five years, the Dalton Chess Program has sent an accomplished group of chess players to this national event and reached a record team size this year! Over the time we have attended, Dalton's team has taken first place four out of five times. Our U12 team (Pippa Lee '24, Julia Miyasaka '24, Montana Owens '25 and Veda Safranek '24) placed 1st in the country for the 3rd year in a row! Our U10 and U8 teams each placed 5th. Individual awards were also earned by 4 girls (Safranek, Lee, Miyasaka, and Lauren Nam '26).
The Dalton Chess Team delivered yet more proof that Tigers play chess this past weekend (March 11-12, 2017) at the New York State Scholastic Chess Championships in Saratoga Springs, NY. Dalton's Primary Team (3rd grade and below) and Elementary Team (6th grade and below) each came in first place, while our K-1 Team placed third and our High School Team came in fourth.
The First New York State Girls Team and Individual Championships was full of friendly female faces. Dalton girls showed they are a major chess powerhouse: our K-6 team dominated the competition, winning the state championship team trophy, while first grader Stephanie Weinberg and fifth grader Julia Miyasaka won individual titles as state champions. Winners of the championship tournaments gained free entries to two Continental Chess tournaments.
On Friday, January 27, Dalton Chess hosted its second K-1 Friendly of the school year with over 60 children participating! The event was a mix of both fun and competitive chess, allowing the children who participated to learn more about tournament play while having fun with their friends from Dalton. Parents also had a chance to socialize and learn more about the chess community at Dalton and in New York City from experienced chess parent. And every child went home with a trophy for giving their best effort.
Great results at the 2016 National K-12 Grade Championships in Nashville. At this mid-December competition, Dalton's chess team came in first in 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th grades. The team finished in second place in 4th, 8th and 10th grades.
