Dalton Crowned 2022 High School National Chess Champions!

The Dalton Chess team captured the National High School K-12 Chess Championship for the first time in school history! The team conquered a formidable field at this year's championship, held in Memphis, Tennessee, April 8-10.
Dalton faced off against one of the strongest fields in the tournament's history, with over 1,000 players from across the country. The loaded group of competitors featured three International Masters and two Fide Masters, including Dalton’s Gus Huston '24.
The team diligently prepared for this year’s championship under the supervision of Chess Coach and Women International Master Beatriz Marinello.

The trip to Memphis got off to an unlucky start, with nearly half the team delayed at LaGuardia Airport due to bad weather. In the end, seven of Dalton’s 10 players were able to make it to the tournament albeit into the late hours of the night.

Once they arrived, the team excelled by overtaking the competition with great strategy and chess savvy, aided by Coach Beatriz and local Memphis chess coach Alex King.

Individually, Gus earned National High School Chess Co-Champion, and Ryan Peterson '24 came in 13th place.

Dalton Chess Championship Team (listed alphabetically): Langley Beaudoin '23, Gus Huston '24, Maxwell Massiah '25, Max Motolla '25, Iris Mou '27, Ryan Peterson '24, and Nathaniel Shuman '24.

Due to the flight cancellations, the following three key players supported the team in spirit, cheering from afar: Sumit Dhar '24, Veda Safranek '24, and William Safranek '26.

The team is excited to be back competing in person and is hopeful that this is the first of many more championships for Dalton!
