Armorer Jeff Wasson Impresses Dalton 3rd Graders with His Unique Skills

Jeff Wasson, a talented armorer, captivated Dalton 3rd graders with his impressive skills and knowledge of 14th and 15th-century armor.
Wasson not only creates armor but has also jousted in it —giving him a unique perspective on its functionality. Because he focuses on crafting and building armor, Jeff prefers to be called an armorer rather than a blacksmith And, as a trained artist and sculptor, Wasson also understands the importance of capturing the proper shapes that make authentic armor an art form.

Jeff demonstrated his skills to the young students, showcasing how blacksmiths heat wrought iron or steel pieces until the metal becomes soft enough to be shaped with hand tools. During the event, sponsored by The Museum Program, Wasson and his assistant cast bronze and worked on armor smithing and forging. Wasson provided the students with a small square of steel that they decorated with hammers and punches. This interactive, hands-on experience resonated with students and helped them to contextualize the Age of Exploration cultures they have been studying this year. Thanks to Dalton's Museum Program for providing this immersive experience!
