Computer Science Team Attends Cybersecurity Competition

More than 50 Dalton students participated among more than 5000 registered participants in the picoCTF competition, a cybersecurity competition offered by Carnegie Mellon. CTF stands for Capture The Flag, and students are asked to hack into secure locations to find flags. In teams of up to five participate in a series of challenges where participants must reverse engineer, break, hack, decrypt, or do whatever it takes to solve the challenge. The challenges are all set up with the intent of being hacked, making it an excellent, legal way to get hands-on experience in current security practices and privacy.
Our top team, Toasty the Toaster, consisting of Kate Kaplin '19, Ryan Chen '19, Alex Studer '19, Claire Wilson '19, and Ava Mohajer '19 came in 26th place among high school teams with 4595 points. Hackers usually identify as white-hat (meaning well-meaning) or black-hat (meaning ill-intentioned). The top team was given white-hats as a prize for their accomplishment and an admonition for the future.
