Senior Wins National Awards for Girls in Tech Anti-Bullying Curriculum

Senior Carisa Shah was selected as a 2018 National winner of the NCWIT (National Center for Women & Information Technology) Award for Aspirations in Computing given each year to tech motivated girls with outstanding achievements. The award was based on her bullying curriculum and website designed to help keep motivated girls in tech.
Genuinely interested in pursuing tech with a focus on robotics and engineering, her interest in developing a bullying curriculum for girls started from her sophomore year with an invitation to the White House to attend a summit on the United State of Women, an Obama initiative. There, Carisa learned that girls often leave the male-dominated field due to bullying, so she developed the curriculum for girls in Grades 4-8 and produced a website CyberSensibility.org that has educated over 650 girls to date. Working with Health and Wellness Director Justine Fonte, Carisa created the content for her site that serves as a source for her materials and platform for fundraising for this worthy cause. With a grant she earned recently, Carisa was also able to package printed curriculum materials to distribute to needy schools and camps, free of charge. 
 
Carisa also won the Three Dot Dash award, an organization that promotes excellence in global teen leadership. View her Global Teen Leader 2018 page on Three Dot Dash. Attending several conferences and competitions around the country and globe helped her realize that girls at Dalton are lucky, thriving and on the leading edge in tech, unlike their counterparts who are likely avoiding tech due to bullying they experience when they try it out.

Dalton is proud of Carisa for her excellent work, and that she is also earning this well-deserved national recognition.
