Coronavirus Prevention and Planning - Message from Jim Best - 02/27/20

Dear Dalton Community,

Earlier this week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the country on the current status of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). The CDC emphasized that the number of cases in the US is very small, but that the global situation is evolving. The CDC encouraged schools and businesses to prepare for possible contingencies. We take these reports very seriously. We're closely monitoring all available information from the CDC and the NYS Department of Health and NYC Health. We have a working team in place and are reviewing plans and protocols, including the possibility of providing remote instruction.

We're making decisions about upcoming school trips and will provide specific information to each trip group. After much deliberation, we've decided to cancel the trips to Italy and Greece. For now, all other trips remain scheduled, although this may change as events unfold.

We also anticipate that many community members will travel over Spring Break. As more countries are being placed under travel advisories due to coronavirus, please refer to the CDC's travel advisories for updates. We'll continue to monitor the situation and will be in touch with you, if necessary.

Currently, we're focused on general disease prevention. We're deep cleaning our buildings and encouraging students to wash their hands and to recuperate at home when they're not feeling well. For additional recommendations on how to stay healthy and avoid the spread of any communicable disease, please review the NYC Health letter or the International SOS recommendations

We're committed to keeping everyone in our community safe and healthy and providing clear, timely communications as this situation develops. Given the level of media attention, some children may become anxious and have questions about the virus. Although published a few weeks ago, this article provides helpful suggestions for talking with your child about coronavirus. In addition, our school psychologists Debbie Tascher (FP) (dtascher@dalton.org) or 212-423-5405; Glenn Stein (MS) (Glenn_Stein@dalton.org) or 212-423-5337; and Josie Diaz (HS) (Josie_Diaz@dalton.org) or 212-423-5256 are available to help.

As always, the health and safety of our students is our highest priority, and we'll continue to update you with any new developments.

Sincerely,

Jim
