6th Graders Explore Marine Life in Spanish Class

For the past month, Dr. Carmen Campos and 6th grade Spanish students have been studying marine life to widen their language skills, and they even added a new, aquatic member to their class.

As part of this STEAM-based Spanish program, 6th graders studied different types of marine life to expand their Spanish vocabulary, including reading a book about a sea turtle named Esmeralda. Esmeralda's adventures provided the class with many opportunities to discuss dangers to our marine ecosystems.

During their classes, students learned how sandcastles can create obstacles for baby turtles heading to sea. To help create awareness, students built their own model sandcastles figures that included messages written in Spanish to educate others.

"As we examined sandcastle competitions all over the world, we decided to have our own competition to raise awareness and present a topic of choice with a message for all to see,” said Spanish Teacher Carmen Campos. "The students used materials from cake mix, clay, recycled egg cartons, and cardboard to create their sandcastle figures with varied messages of awareness. One such message was, ‘You change the world by being yourself’ by Yoko Ono."

To make a tangible impact, the class decided to adopt a leatherback sea turtle from the NY Marine Rescue Center, which was found cold-stunned this past December. Students got to meet their sea turtle, named Pink Floyd, in a virtual field trip of the Rescue Center where marine biologists and veterinarians showed how they bring seals and sea turtles back to good health. The students enjoyed their virtual trip on Zoom and are looking forward to following Pink Floyd’s release back to the water.
