Team Spirit Propels Dalton’s K-9 Chess Team to National Championship
The Dalton Tigers K-9 Chess Team prevailed with the 2021 National Online Scholastic Championship by defeating a field of 56 schools from across the country on April 24-25.

The competition was held online with 564 participants in the K-9 section. Gus Huston ‘24 and Nate Shuman ‘24 led the charge for the Tigers by tying for first place in the highly competitive field. Approximately 10 percent of the players will go on to compete in the Individual Championship Competition in June.
Dalton Chess Program Director Beatriz Marinello is exceptionally proud of her team’s effort exclaiming, “The players who participated in this event are a shining example of the Dalton team spirit!”
After his outstanding performance, Gus said, “It was great to be competing as a team once again in a large scholastic event. While nothing beats being together in person as a team it felt good to be contributing towards a common team effort. The event was run well, and I look forward to playing as a team again, either in person or online."

Following the team’s victory, Nate said, “I want to congratulate the Dalton team on winning the National Championship. This tournament was executed very well for the circumstances we are in. Eight rounds was a lot but I enjoyed every second of it. I am pleased with my outcome, as well as the whole team, and I look forward to carrying this momentum through the final stage in a couple of months. Go Tigers!”
