Dalton Tiger Report - This Week In Athletics (2-2)

Read about some of the great performances from the week in Dalton Athletics. This week features a recap of the basketball games at Warren Hines Night, including a dominating win by the Girls Basketball team, a come-from-behind victory by the Boys Basketball team, and a sweep in a dual met by the Wrestling team.
Girls Basketball
The Dalton Girls Basketball team aimed to sweep the series against Trinity after they came out with a 56-30 victory earlier in the season against their cross-town rival. The Tigers jumped out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter capped off by senior Toni DaCosta scoring a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the corner. After two quick baskets by Trinity to start the second quarter, Dalton shut down their opponents and finished off the half on a 19-0 run and a 37-8 halftime lead. Dalton continued their domination in the second with a strong defensive effort anchored by 5 blocks from freshman Mary Ashley Groot and a balanced offensive attack and finished off Trinity, winning 66-27. DaCosta highlighted the night with six three-pointers, among the highest in a single game in Dalton Girls Basketball history. Dalton looks to build on their 14-3 record as they take on the top team in the Ivy League, Horace Mann, on Monday, February 3.

Boys Basketball
With a 13-3 record, Dalton entered Warren Hines Night exuding confidence having previously defeated their opponent Trinity by 26 points earlier in the season. Yet after a hot-shooting first quarter by Trinity, and with Dalton's struggles on offense, the Tigers found themselves trailing by 14 points after three quarters. Dalton turned up the defensive intensity and scored 10 points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 4. After trading baskets for the next few minutes, Dalton tied up the game at 53 on two free throws by junior Will Bousquette and headed into an overtime period. Neither team was able to score for the first three minutes of the extra period when senior Sean Ryan found sophomore Caleb Callahan under the basket to put the Tigers. Ryan sealed the win with a stepback three-pointer on the next possession, giving Dalton a remarkable come from behind victory to give Dalton their 14th win of the season. The Tigers take on Collegiate on Monday, February 3 in an important league game and rematch from earlier this season when the Dutchmen of Collegiate defeated Dalton.

Wrestling
The Dalton Wrestling Team took on Stony Brook and Churchill on Warren Hines Night. The night started off strong against Stony Brook when sophomore Graham Yarden got a big pin in the first match of the night. He was followed by pins from freshman Nicco Slick and Alex Rowe. The duel meet ended with two first period pins by the senior captains Jeremy Yarden and Jamaal Spence capping off a 48-36 team victory. In the second match of the night Senior, Jamaal Spence capped off the victory with another first period pin securing a 66-0 victory.
