HS Mandarin Students Experience Chinese Culture in Flushing, Queens

HS Mandarin students went on a memorable field trip to Flushing Queens on April 14, where they experienced Chinese culture firsthand. The trip's highlight was a Chinese instrument class; students learned about the Gu-Zheng, a traditional Chinese zither with a history of over 2,500 years. Under the guidance of a skilled instructor, students learned the basics of playing the instrument including the five notes used in traditional Chinese music.
The students also participated in a scavenger hunt, which challenged them to use their Mandarin skills to read signs and communicate with local Chinese-speaking people. The scavenger hunt included ordering boba teas in Mandarin and playing song-guessing games with the locals. The students were delighted to discover that they could successfully put their language skills to the test in a real-world setting.

The day ended with a delicious dim sum meal at a local restaurant where the students enjoyed traditional Chinese dishes and reflected on their fruitful day. This excursion provided students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and deepen their understanding of the language and music.
